AANVULLING / SUPPLEMENTARY BIOGRAPHY WITH THANKS TO JOHAN VAN HAALEN

Onderstaande tekst heb ik deze week geschreven als drummer van Sugar & The Lollipops 1981, het jaar waarin Monique Gebbing de voormalige band Fairytale reeds had verlaten en een nieuwe band de volledige public relations moest gaan doen. Ik heb het achterwege laten van informatie over die stand-in band altijd als geschiedvervalsing beschouwd; nergens ter wereld staat hier namelijk iets over genoteerd.

Met deze vervangende band heeft Monique drie televisie-opnamen gemaakt en in talloze tijdschriften gestaan met bijbehorende foto’s. Ze staan zelfs op beide LP albums afgebeeld (op Sugar and Spice alleen Monique en ik, vanwege een duet met elkaar op het album). Bovendien hebben de muzikanten van deze band -zoals je in onderstaand stuk kunt lezen- ook aan de muzikale totstandkoming van beide albums meegewerkt in de studio.

This clip "Dancing Dynamo" is showing Monique at her very best! She performs with a new band which had greater looks than the original group Fairytale which was left by Monique in 1980. After the split-up with Fairytale the first single had already become a hit in Germany and Danmark, and with huge success ahead in Holland in 1981 somebody had to represent this music on television, in newspapers and mags. 
This is where these new guys, all recruited from the Dutch pubrockband Sally & the Snobs, show up. They were discovered by producer Tony Britnell. He derived the name "Sugar & the Lollipops" directly from this rockband's name. Not only the looks were better: they sounded fantastic as well! They were a real live rockin' band! 
Due to the split-up of the original band Fairytale with Monique, the new band also performed the nr.1 hit "I Can Dance" on the Dutch television broadcastings "Nederland Muziekland" and "TopPop" in 1981. They also did some recording on the two LP albums "Sugar and the Lollipops" and "Sugar and Spice", together with Pim Koopman and some members of the Dutch The Lang Tall Ernie Band. Both records were engineered and partially produced by John Sonneveld.
It is a shame they couldn't tour with Monique live on stage, because all members of the new Lollipop band were already too much engaged in their studies. As a consequence they were not prepared for this huge success. Even in this Dancing Dynamo clip the guitar player is a stand-in because one of the three Van Haalen brothers (all in the band) had to cancel his performance because of an exam! This also meant that a duet with featuring drummer Joe Halen (who is actually Johan van Haalen, and can be heard on "Kiss Me Goodnight" of the "Sugar and Spice" album) was a missed opportunity to plan a music career with Monique as a couple. A reunion with her former band Fairytale was far out of the question by then. Monique decided to go solo in 1981 and performed, amongst others, "Something Old, Something New". She passed away in 2007.
The original band (Fairytale) still exists, I believe. Hopefully we may hear from them once again. With another hit record perhaps? Sure they have the writing skills. Their hit songs with the late Monique sound crunchy, even today.
